[Sno] Berberis

Post by Sno »

I bought this a few years ago from a nursery in Piallago ,Canberra . I paid probably under $30 . I grew it in a pond pot and the original trunk chop was to high . So last spring I chopped again and put it in the pot it's in now . It's current height is 180mm .

Every time I see this species I really like it. Keen to see what you do. Are they a slow grower? I understand scars don't heal over very well.

Cheers,
Pearcy.

Hi Pearcy . I've had another one for quite a few years and while the scars don't heal over well they tend to blend in with the bark . This one was chopped to a bare trunk and at the same time I took off at least 3/4 of the roots it has now back in October .

Thanks Kez .

This guy is keen to get on with the comp and has woken up early . I normally wouldn't expect it to leaf out until the end of September.

I repotted it today and put it in a larger pot to give it some room to move . And added some wire .

I will give it some protection for a while to let it settle in . Forecast for -6 tonight .

This looks old and thus I like the look and apparent age. Shape is good and taper is also OK so there is a lot to like, except for the thorns of course.
Looking forward to the red spring foliage.

So I took the wire off a couple of weeks ago and have left it to do its thing . The branches set nicely and will get a hard cut in the new year to start the ramification .

Thanks Matlea .
Needed a haircut , time to get some ramification . This species have great bark ,cool colors , fruit and flowers and are easy to grow , But they are tricky to ramify . Ideally needs another year before chopping , two months left before the next frost maybe ;) so time to move .
