Thanks Thyme traveler .

Getting bushy up top .

"[quote="Sno"] two months left before the next frost maybe ;) so time to move ."

Spoke to soon had frost for the last two nights . Not that a Berberis will care that much with an out of season frost .

I've been watching this thread keenly for some time.

In a short period of time the tree has improved dramatically.

I look forward to the next instalment

How vigorous are they?

Hi Daluke . They are fairly vigorous growers I've been letting it grow shoots to about 5 or 6 leaves then cutting back to 2 every couple of weeks . I'll have to wait till it drops its leaves to see what I'll keep for next year . A smaller pot might slow it down a bit .

A sneak preview of the final pot to show to show the colour with the trees autumn foliage . The pot is more suited to the autumn colour than the spring colour .

Hi  Sno,
Lookin' very chilly there with those last pics - just wondering if you have ever had flowers / fruits on your Berberis? I've got one the same (purple leaf) which I've been training for the last year or so, and am not sure how/when to achieve some flowers (does it produce flower buds / fruit on bare branches during dormancy?) or does regular trimming back of the foliage ends during growing period sacrifice any chance of flowers developing?
Thanks in advance.....Keep calm

Berberis flower on old wood in the spring . I'd expect this one to have a few flowers this year :fc: . With regards to trimming from what I've noticed the autumn colour is more intense on the tips of new growth so if you can time it to have a new flush as it's going into autumn you should get a great display . Grow in full sun . The berries can hang on into the winter .

Thanks Sno for sharing your wisdom & experience.
Hopefully I will get some flowers amongst the thorns this year.
I was about to post a picture of mine here, but then thought I should ask your permission first, seeing this is a competition category thread.

 Sno,
Well its only early days yet, but I'm aiming for a long creeping sorta style....purchased last year $10 as old nursery stock from the reduced (sick) sales table. Was ugly & thorny with bare branches crossing every direction, so approx. 80% of the original plant was cut off. It had no tag, so I was pleased to see the purple colouring once it started to leaf.

Nice idea , it will be a great winter image with berries hanging off the length off it . The pot next to it would suit it well ,giving it a more feminine feel .
