I'd let it naturally rot away.
Whilst I think hollow will look awesome I believe you will lose too much width down low right now.
Great effort on this tree nonetheless.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Thanks for the update Matt. I still shake my head at this post (in a good way ;) - it shows us all what can be achieved in a short space of time, setbacks and all. And with stock that might seem odd at first blush. The waterwell pot if a logical choice for such a tree too.

The shari looks good already. I don't think carving is required.

Today I repotted this tree and tidied up the branches a bit. There was a little bit of dieback on the extremities but overall she's looking pretty healthy. The new apex is a bit on the skinny side but that won't last long. I'll leave it in this pot for a while but come summer I'll probably pop it back into a waterwell pot.

Fantastic work on making such a beautiful and well structured weeping little tree! Very impressive! Look forward to progressions over the coming years, love it!

It looks like your youngest has talent . This looks amazing .The shari really evokes an old feeling , this tree looks like the old willows struggling to survive on the Monaro Tablelands and to think it’s a shohin size .

This is looking great, and inspiring - I need to try willows again, but something a bit more interesting than the long straight sticks that I accidentally boiled last summer :palm:

Boiled willow .... ... probably not ideal! This tree continues to be a highlight Matt - cheers, for the update.
