Nice mate,

If I could have I would have gone with a procumbens for sure!

Good luck

Thanks Kerrin, Tien sure has some incredible stock and variety at his nursery.
Eager to have a crack at this comp format but I'm even more excited about what I may learn from it :)

All the best with your trees, can't wait to see them transform into masterpieces!

Cheers,
Ben

Worked on my tree over the weekend and once again realized how hard it is to photograph bonsai... Haha
A pat on the back to all you talented photographers out there!

So I've gone for a semi-cascade, I wanted to avoid cascade in general but couldn't see anything else working with the trunk angle.
The trunk looks like it will need to be split at some stage as it's quite thin down low due to a shari on the right.

Will be interesting to see how it looks when it's planted at the new angle.

Also... correct me if I'm wrong but I'm thinking this is a Squamata rather than Procumbens.. I don't really know how to tell the difference.

Really like where you are taking this one.

Looks like a J. procumbens to me. I'm sure someone who knows how to ID them properly will chime in though :)

Thanks Literati, I spend a lot of time umm-ing and ahh-ing if I'm making the right decisions. Will be a few more years before I'm confident with what I'm doing :P

I'll upload an intended final image of this soon too :)

I believe the main difference between the two is the bark. Over time, Squamata have a tendency to develop more textured bark, whereas procumbens keep the reddy brown, smooth bark.

But I could be wrong.

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

Makes sense thanks Jarrod!

Here's a crude sketch of what I'm aiming for...

An update on this one, I repotted the other week, not super confident with how it's looking or sitting.. Some 'rule abiding' suggestions or criticisms would be appreciated :P

Had had a very nice root ball, but with the angle change I've cut some areas in the hope they will form some new roots and packed with sphagnum.

It's popping some very healthy growth so all good so far :)

Not to much to report on this tree, a bit of new growth but I lost a couple of small branches up top.. possibly due to root pruning, seems to have slowed down now but if it continues I fear it may be an infection.

Not much to report as winter approaches. Considering a few changes though...
