Unsure of insect eggs

Post by Mickeyjaytee »

Hi guys!

I dug up my Chinese elm today and noticed what looks like insect eggs. I’ve left them for now because perhaps they are a native species. If anyone could identify them I’d greatly appreciate it!

The sawfly eggs I've seen have been oblong and laid directly on the leaf

Probably not...oh well. (Unless you're in the US.) Your profile doesn't say.

Sorry I didn’t think to even mention my location. I’m in Perth, Western Australia. I’ve sent the picture off to the department so hopefully in the meantime someone will pick it up. I’m hoping it’s just a native species and I’ll leave it be 😁

S'ok, but yeah, location does help. I've asked an insect expert here in Qld, but since you're in WA he might not be on top of all the ones you have there.

I reckon Mel nailed it..

Stink bug (pentatomidae) eggs.

Would be pretty hard to get to species level. Most do feed on plants but some a predatory. I don’t reckon they’d do much harm and they might do good..

Hopefully this can be used a a future reference if anyone else sees something similar! Thanks for all the replies guys!!

Edit: Sorry DangerousDave, I was typing up while you replied. You were spot on! Awesome stuff. I shall leave them be!
