Spots on JBP needles

Post by SteveT »

Has anyone seen this before?

The tree has been growing quite vigorously but the needles are much more yellow than my other JBPs. I have treated it with Confidor a few times recently but I am keen to hear if anyone else has had this and knows what best to treat it with.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

Mate,

could be some kind of mite, red spider mites attack jbp but are small and hard to spot, any small webs around the needles? also are the yellowing needles the ones with spots or random throughout the tree ?. If it is red spider mite they are difficult to irradicate without the proper pesticide.

Hi Noah,
Thanks for the reply.

There are no visible webs. The yellowing is on pretty much all of the needles. Most needles also have the small spots on them but they are harder to see on some.

steve, try misting the tree to see if you have webs, the water will help highlight any webs on the tree if there are any :D

also, before you do that hold a piece of white paper under that branches and foliage and tap the tree to shake it, if you have little spots on the white paper that move you probably have spider mites.

the yellowing could also be cause from over/underwatering the tree although JBP generally like a little bit drier soil.

jamie :D

Steve, it could also be needle cast( rust ). A fungal disease if it is you need to treat it with a fungicide.
Now that can be dangerous as it could also kill the mycorrhiza. Some of the JBP whizzes should be able to help.

Sorry to put a scare in to it. Just check it out though.

Cheers ;) Pup

Pup i reckon your properly closer to the mark however it dosent seem advanced enough to warrent yellowing needles all over the tree? maybe a secondary issue going on?

Hi guys
fungal issues such as blight, rust, dothistroma etc should be treated with a Bordeaux mixture or an alternative like kocide blue extra
mites can be treated with kelthane if you can find it a good alternative is natrasoap
I think what you have , however would best be treated with pest oil . I cannot describe what you have , however I have had it before on a juniper as well as a pine and successfully treated it with pest oil.
The problem occurred for me after watering on a hot still and humid evening . It is best to avoid wetting foliage in these circumstances.
Hope this helps

oh, also, don't give a tree too much sun after administering pest oil
Cheers,
Leigh.
