Stockists of Diatomite in Melbourne?

Post by The Surgeon »

Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can purchase Diatomite in the Melbourne :?: After a significant amount of internet searching I am finding some difficulty locating it. A stockist in Melbourne’s west would be most beneficial.

This is a bit of a coincidence because we've been having this discussion lately.

The closest to you that I now know of might be Sage Horticultural.

Maidenwell is around 21 bucks a 40 litre bag there. I now get mine from B & T Ferns and Orchids in Silvan for the same price but that's a while from you. :D

If you're prepared to travel to Silvan you can get 25 kg bags of Coopers Dolomite from E.E. Muir and sons in Monbulk Rd for about $7.50

Just wanted to let the 'Melbournites' know of my experience with Sage Horticulture. After being referred by teejay I gave them a call on Saturday. I didn't catch the name of the gentleman who answered the phone but he was most helpful. He explained that he isn't open each weekend but he does stock Maidenwell in:
- 0 - 2 mm bags
- 2 - 7 mm bags
- 7 - ? (don't recall the largest measurement)

I rang at 12.30pm and he was just closing up. He offered to take an order from me and take it to his home nearby for me to pick up sometime during the week at night.

I know this is not a Bonsai nursery per se, however I just wanted to let you all know of the great service I received.......... and I haven't even set foot inside the place or purchased anything....yet!!!

He also told me that he won't be open next weekend as he is going to an Orchid convention/meeting. He also stated that he had sold 15 bags of Maidenwell on Saturday morning and one of his customers came from Geelong. For those of outside Melbourne I estimate that to be a 80km trip each way!

Anyway, just wanted to let you know of my experience and to thank teejay for referring Sage Horticultre. Thanks teejay!

The manthat you most likely spoke to is Bob Campbell, Sage Horticulture's Managing Director. Definitely the person to speak to regarding anything technical, be warned he love a chat, and a dollar!

That's incredible service! You're very welcome Surgeon. :D Giving each other a hand is what this place should be all about.

I haven't even been there myself, Ant referred me to them a few weeks back when I asked a similar question to yours but I happened to find a supplier closer to me about 20mins away. After reading how far some people travel for it (Geelong!) I feel pretty lucky now. Popular stuff isn't it!

He didn't happen to mention if Maidenwell was now out of business did he? :?
I really do wish they'd hurry up and grow.
