May be an odd questions but i have always wondered why many people have coloured tape of some kind (may be electrical tape) on their tools?
Anyone have any idea?

To mark the tools as their own if they are at a workshop

Yep - when you participate in workshops at clubs and other events, the worktables can be close to each other and sometimes tools can get mixed up and/or people will borrow tools - the tape helps to identify your tools during at at the end of the night when clean up begins.
