Bonsai Open & Shohin Pot Open 2020

Despite the difficult times we face or are about to face with Coronavirus, the problem will inevitably end and we will move forward. In the hope this occurs within six (6) months we trust that the Bonsai Open can be held in September this year and therefore wish to provide as much advance notice so that people can prepare their trees and pots.

Subject to the above, the Central Coast Bonsai club takes pleasure in announcing the Bonsai Open, which following last year’s success will now be held over two days, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 2020.

Open to all Australian bonsai artists, we hope to attract exceptional bonsai entries and therefore offer a significant prize pool:
• 1st Place $3,000
• 2nd Place $1,000
• 3rd Place $ 500
• Best Australian native bonsai: $ 500 + $200 Native yamadori voucher from “Tree Makers”

In addition to a superb display of bonsai, free demonstrations will be held each day with Joe Morgan-Payler, Hugh Grant and Andrew Edge. A comprehensive sales area lead by Ray Nesci (event Gold Sponsor), Hugh Grant, speciality pots by Denise Allen & Penny Davis, substrate sales with Ken Poole, club sales tables, raffles and demonstration tree auctions.

This year two independent bonsai experts (Joe Morgan-Payler and Brenda Parker) will judge exhibits in line with the criteria included in the Bonsai Open Guideline and Entry Form.
So….be part of the fun and enter a tree, or two, or three……….


Shohin Open Pot Competition
We recognise a beautiful pot will make all the difference to the aesthetics of a bonsai, and therefore to increase and support the awareness of our fantastic Australian potters, we are proud to announce the Shohin Pot competition, open to all Australian ceramic artists. Other than the pot being suitable for use with a Shohin bonsai the pot must have an Australian aesthetic.

To attract exceptional entries, in addition to a great trophy we are offering an attractive prize pool:
• 1st Place $400
• 2nd Place $150
• 3rd Place $ 75

The attached flyer outlines the schedule of events and other details.

Even if you do not intend to enter a tree or Shohin pot, make sure you pencil the date in your calendar, - it’s going to be a “date not to be missed”.
Accommodation (Discounted prices & complimentary bus transport to and from the venue) will be announced shortly.

Hi,
Like all bonsai enthusiasts, the Central Coast bonsai club is looking forward to things returning to normal. All going well, we look forward to the Bonsai and Shohin Pot Open event on 12 & 13th September.

Open to every Australian bonsai artist and ceramic artist, with nearly $6,000 in prize money and prestigious trophies we believe this will be a not to miss event.

Due to the uncertainty of the Coronavirus situation, we have extended the closing date for entries of bonsai and Shohin pots until 31st July 2020.

Full details can be found on our website but to make life easier we have attached the rules and entry forms for both the Bonsai and Shohin Potter competition. Also attached is a flyer and announcement brochure.

The weekend will be filled with bargains, auctions, and fantastic demonstrations, let alone the opportunity to see some beautiful bonsai and shohin pottery.

For those who entering, please send your details as soon as possible and for the others who will visit, we are sure you are going to have a great time.

Today we received an interesting question in relation to the "Shohin Open" competition, in particular the person asked whether concrete pots could be entered in addition to ceramic pots.

The competition is open to any and all Shohin pots.

It was my personal mistake for focusing on "ceramic" pots as they are the type traditionally seen. However, some fantastic pots can be made of alternate materials so please don't hold back with your entries.

Whilst we had been confident of proceeding with the Bonsai and Shohin Open on 12 & 13 September, the recurrence of Coronavirus events in Victoria and NSW has concerned us.

After careful deliberation and in the interest of public safety we have no option but to cancel the Bonsai and Shohin Open event this year.

We would like to express our thanks to the many people who entered either spectacular Bonsai and or Shohin pots which would have undoubtedly ensured a spectacular show and event.

We apologise for any inconvenience and trust we can all stay safe and well and look forward to hosting the event in future.
