Shipping Bonsai interstate?

Post by DEVPB »

Evening all,

I wasn't sure where to post this question but thought it was best fit here.

I am from Brisbane, but am heading down to melbourne for a conference in a few weeks.
I've always longed to go to the varieties of nurseries down in Melbourne, and now that I finally have the chance I'd love to make some great purchases.
My question is: If I do end up buying stock, will I be able to get them transprorted back to brisbane?
Or is it just a waste of money?

Thanks in advance.

I've sent trees from Brisbane, but not had them sent from Melbourne.
It's expensive, but if there's a tree you want, that you're unlikely to find here in Bris, then yes, it's worth it.
I've used Sendle, where you "save" money if you pack it yourself, assuming you have the correct packing materials, and your parcel fits in the limit size, and Pack and Send, where they will do it all, at a cost.

There is technically quarantine at QLD border but in practice nothing is ever checked.
I believe there's also some plant quarantine line north of Brisbane into FNQ but, again, no shipments have ever been checked or stopped.
There are plant transport companies but, as they mainly work withing the nursery industry, it can be hard for an individual to find them and book just a few plants. You could make enquiries with the nurseries you intend to deal with to see if they have any contacts or ideas. Most will be willing to help if they can.

I send all my orders through Auspost because I have access locally. Problems are very, very rare over many years and lots of plants. Service and delivery times are also great. Just need to pack well so the staff and machinery can move the box without dislodging the pots inside. Machines can't read labels so the contents must be packed to withstand movement, possible jolts, etc.

Just remember that some of the species that grow well in southern climate won't always do as well up there.
Anything in particular you intend to look for?

I'm not sure, But I was really looking forward to getting some potetial JBP stock from Baloc nursery as I've heard the effort he goes to with his stock is phenominal. Other than that, it would just be any interesting junipers that I may find, and maybe a potential maple... although my Japanese maple's haven't woken up yet (worryingly)
