Bonsai Open & Shohin Pot Open - 2022
With increased vaccinations we hope to return to a “new normal” where we can enjoy Bonsai exhibitions and events.
As such, the Central Coast Bonsai club takes pleasure in announcing the Bonsai Open and Shohin Pot Competition to be held over two days, Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March 2022.
Bonsai Open
Open to all Australian bonsai artists, we hope to attract exceptional bonsai entries and therefore offer a significant prize pool:
• 1st Place $3,000
• 2nd Place $1,000
• 3rd Place $ 500
• Best Australian native bonsai $ 500
In addition to a superb display of bonsai and Shohin pots, attendees can expect:
• Free concurrent demonstrations with Hugh Grant/Jarryd Bailey and Hugh Grant/Andrew Edge.
• A comprehensive sales area lead by:
o Ray & Clinton Nesci (event Gold Sponsor)
o Tree Makers
o Denise Allen speciality pots
o Club sales
o Raffles
o Demonstration tree auctions
Three expert bonsai artists (Brenda Parker, Clinton Nesci and Hugh Grant) will judge exhibits in line with the criteria included in the following document.
Shohin Open Pot Competition
A beautiful pot makes all the difference to the aesthetics of a bonsai. Therefore to increase and support the awareness of our fantastic Australian potters, we are proud to announce the Shohin Pot competition, open to all Australian ceramic artists.
Other than the pot being suitable for use with a Shohin bonsai the pot must have an Australian aesthetic.
To attract exceptional entries, in addition to a great trophy we are offering an attractive prize pool:
• 1st Place $400
• 2nd Place $150
• 3rd Place $ 75
Please refer to the following document for further details. Even if you do not intend to enter a tree or Shohin pot, make sure you pencil the date in your calendar - it’s going to be a “date not to be missed”.
Accommodation (Discounted prices & complimentary bus transport to and from the venue) is available.

Re: Bonsai Open & Shohin Pot Open - 2022
Planning and preparation is progressing well for the Bonsai and Shohin Open event scheduled for 5 & 6 March 2022.
It is going to be an exceptional event with great bonsai, excellent vendors, free demonstration by three extraordinary bonsai artists, in a phenomenal setting provided by the Mingara Recreational Club.
You may start to see people wearing a Bonsai Open Tee shirt. If you would like a shirt, they are available via the club website
If you would like to enter a Bonsai or Shohin pot, please refer to the following entry guides:
Bonsai Open
Shohin Pot Open
Don’t forget the closing date for entries is 21 January 2022.
I know two (2) months to the closing date seems a long way off, but it is four (4) months since the announcement …………. and that time has flown by.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask
Regards

Re: Bonsai Open & Shohin Pot Open - 2022
Hi
Just a quick reminder that the closing date for entries is 21 January 2022
It is only 4 weeks away and we have the busy Christmas and New Year period in between ............
If you would like to enter the Bonsai Open and / or Shohin pottery Open for a chance to win a slice of the $5,625 prize money up for grabs, then get your entries in soon.
If you are holding off until the last minute to enter - it wont affect the review / acceptance process as entry applications will not be reviewed until closing date.
So make sure you don't miss out and apply now......
Your entry will be confidential.
There is going to be lots of fun and events on the day - it is a great opportunity to line up your best material with your peers.
Fingers crossed we will be able to make a huge announcement as we get closer to the event.
Regards
Steve

Only One week until entries Close
One week to go until entries close on 21 January.
Not only is there serious money up for grabs but it is a great opportunity to exhibit your bonsai alongside your peers.
If you would like to submit a pre-selection entry, please submit your entry before end of 21 January.
Some people have asked whether their entry fee will be refunded in the event (heaven forbid) of another Covid lockdown. The answer is yes.....

Re: Bonsai Open & Shohin Pot Open - 2022
Just considering whether to make the trip for one of the days (almost 2 hours drive each way). How much is there to do? By that I mean can I easily spend a few hours there for it to be worth the drive?
Got into bonsai around 2 years ago, right when COVID hit so haven't managed to get out to one of these events yet.
Also, what's the buying scene like? I'm keen on picking up some pots (which seems like there will be plenty), but also is there typically much tree stock to browse?

Wow, last time there was plenty of stuff to buy and plenty of stuff to see. Pots, plants and tools.
Could spend a whole day there easily, plus there is beer and good food.

There will be plenty to see, do and buy. Trees from young stock through to established Bonsai. And there will demonstrations on both days too.
It will be highly likely that it will be a top quality show too as it is the only show where decent money is offered for prizes. It will bring out some excellent trees. Well and truly worth it. As long as it isn't flooded

Full steam ahead… Bonsai Open & Shohin Pot Open - 2022
I think Watto and Dansai pretty much summed it up. The Bonsai and Shohin event is well worth a visit.
Some interstate people have already arrived in the area, others are on their way.
After a number of enquires, I would like to confirm that the event is going ahead. It is not affected by the rain.
As you will see when you visit, the Mingara club is very well positioned. There is even a huge covered entrance to the club where you can drop your passengers so they stay nice and dry.
If you are coming from Sydney, Newcastle or beyond, my suggestion would be to follow the M1 Pacific Motorway to the Wyong Rd exit (Wyong, Tuggerah & The Entrance). Then simply follow Wyong Rd all the way to Mingara Drive.
It is going to be a great exhibition with beautiful trees and Shohin pots vying for $6k in prize money. A large vendors area headed by Ray & Clinton Nesci will offer something for everyone. Additionally there will be handmade pots, unique bonsai offerings and a large club members sales area with about 400 bonsai and related items.
If that weren’t enough, the 4hr concurrent demonstrations by Hugh Grant & Jarryd Bailey (Saturday) and Hugh Grant & Andrew Edge (Sunday) will offer a great learning opportunity.
In between the activities and events, there are several great restaurants and cafe’s within the Mingara club to enjoy. (And yes, they have just refurbished two bar areas- maybe they knew some people were returning )
We look forward to seeing you there.
