Peter Adams Workshop Wednesday

Post by kcpoole »

Hi all

Well I have just arrived home and what a day!!

I am one of 9 very happy participants and I had a great day.

Peter and Kate Adams, are 2 of the most wonderful people you are ever likely to meet, and if you ever get a chance to see or work with them, Do so otherwise you miss out one of the great times in life.

Enough of that, and down to the Days activities.

Peter Starts out by having you select the tree you would like to work on, or will help you decide if you cannot. Then Kate will take an initial shot of the tree, while Peter suggests the initial Work to do to get underway. During the early part of the day he will do a quick sketch of his vision for your tree ( Which he takes home to work from later). He will then circulate the group continually to give advice, tips, pointers answer Question as needed while you do the work :-).
After the job on the tree is done, a final photo is taken of the "finished product".
When peter goes home he will then sit down and complete a colour drawing of what his vision is for the tree and these will be posted out to the owner.

Constant banter and discussion with the group ensures a pleasant day for all. Many of us had brought along our copies of his books, which he gladly signs for you.

Kate also Signed my copy of "Bonsia with Japanese Maples" :-)

Now down to my own tree for showing :-)

I selected my Murraya as the tree to have Peter Advise on

The tree was dug initially from a friends garden in August 2007, and was just a bare bunch of trunks.
It is 230mm across the base of the trunk and is about 750mm tall.

It was noted that the Quality of the trees were very good all around, and there was some "Finished" Trees, Raw Stock, and some in the middle.

Some got a complete rework, and some just lots of detail work. Jins added, Branches removed, Lots of wire added. All good stuff

Never fear about your trees brett as they will be very suitable

One note tho, there were no Aus Natives !

Hey thanks all for your comments

Yes I will definitely show it once potted up but I have no idea what pot to put it in as yet. Peters drawing will have his idea when we get it and I will have to wait till then to decide. I will probably have to commission something as I reckon it will be hard to find something "Just right"

Everyone there thought it was a wonderful tree too, so I guess it makes all the hard work in collection it worthwhile.

Hi Ken,

Your tree befits Mr. Adams' reputation. I am sure he is very happy to work on this tree,
and judging by your smile, I think you are happy with the result too :)

Are you thinking round shape for the pot? :)

(I used to remember Mr. Adams' with a lot of hair. I was really puzzled when my dad showed me
his recent picture.)

Best regards.

Yes Daviet I do think round pot would do nicely

The tree will have lots of interest form all directions so wold be a waste to have only 1 "preferred Viewing angle" as Peter says.

A tree does not have a "front" or "Back" he says

I just purchased Peter Adams' book "Bonsai with Japanese maples." I have a small Japanese maple nursery ( we grow about 100 cultivars) in Washington State, and the book jacket says this is where Mr. Adams now resides. I would be very interested in contacting him to find out about offering a class here at Samara Nursery. Could you help me get in touch with him?
Thanks,
Brett Crumley
