Canberra Bonsai Society Annual Show 10-11 October 2020

Post by Canberra Bonsai Society »

[image][/image]The 2020 Canberra Bonsai Society Annual Show will be held on the weekend of the 10-11 October at Canberra High School, Bindubi Street, Macquarie.

The display will again feature high quality bonsai from the collections of CBS members, including some created by local artists currently represented in the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia at the National Arboretum, Canberra (NAC). It will include both traditional exotic plant species and Australian species.

This year we are expecting that there will be a number of bonsai on display that are from new members, some very old trees and there are also expected to be some large group plantings.

Demonstration sessions will be held at 11am daily, covering aspects of designing and maintaining bonsai.

Bonsai Basics sessions will be held at 2pm daily. These sessions are designed for novice bonsai growers or those thinking of taking up the art, and provide an introduction to fundamental bonsai techniques such as wiring, repotting and root pruning, styling and bonsai maintenance.

Plant sales this year will include starter plants, advanced stock trees and styled bonsai. This is a great opportunity to buy bonsai and stock plants of a quality not often available in Canberra.

Australian made and imported Japanese and Chinese bonsai pots, tools and wire will be available for purchase.
Visitors will be able to vote for their favourite bonsai.

A raffle, with prizes of a bonsai, a bonsai pot and a bonsai book, will be held over the weekend as well as a lucky door prize, also of a bonsai.

Yippee another bonsai event to attend. I have been starved of bonsai events over the last six months or so and really looking forward to paying a visit.
I think you may have had a few issues with your images though.

Enjoy like never before Watto!

Of course we in Melbourne can only dream of traveling more than 5km, gathering in a room with other real people, and talking without a muffle and seeing emotional expressions on people’s faces ... let alone a bonsai show ...

Enjoy all you lucky Canberrians, but don’t forget to tell and show us how good it was ;)
Cheers, Ryan

Hello All,

It's been great to see that the forum has been going as before the fires, floods and covid-19. Thanks, Steve, moderators and active members.
Here n Canberra I am being kept indoors today by a very welcome phenomenon: RAIN, lovely rain! I have just been drying my cat with a paper towel, after she ventured outside.

Anyway, my main concern right now is to get the announcement of the Canberra Annual Show back under Board Index. Re-BUMP The club deserves it: the comittee members are working so hard to make it a success. With fingers crossed, of course, hoping that the pandemic invasion decreases!! Who knows, shibui, you may yet make it here. And it will be great to see Watto and friends from Goulburn.

So long, friends!

Only if....
Enjoy and we’d love photos if anyone gets a chance. Indeed, photos from any shows being held around our vast lands at present.

How I wish I could come! Still thinking about the trip that was cancelled earlier in the year. As I have mentioned before - a small issue - relatively speaking - there is much worse and more important going on in the world but still... it would have been great to meet more of the Canberra crew. As it would be great to visit this show. One day my step-father and I will make the trip and it is on that note that this post relates.

I was taken by the azalea in the CBS poster and it reminded me of my step-dad's. His is not a satsuki - so the flowers are a tad larger but I rang him and asked him to send me some photos as it sits today. It is not unlike the beautiful red one noted above. Well I reckon anyway ... but I am biased. ;)

Mark, let me turn tour guide for one minute.
Jump in the car and drive to Goulburn to enjoy the Goulburn Bonsai Society exhibition, after that you can enjoy the local attractions, and maybe a couple in Canberra like the NBPCA. Then off to the Canberra Bonsai Society exhibition before your road trip home. Perfect week away, three bonsai stops and a couple of other things.
That will be next year but time to plan. No need to thank me, your bill is in the mail. Hahaha

MJL: Compliments to your stepfather! What a magnificent Azalea. And compliments for the beautiful photos too. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but it seems to me that places with cold winters produce the nicest Azaleas. If so, Watto should be able to confirm it. Anyway, we are sure to have some at this year's show. I'll post them if we do.

Cheers, PWC and Lisa ... I’ll pass on the feedback and Watto - good plan - if I do such a trip, I’ll shout an ale for sure.

Today week at this time the Canberra Bonsai Society 's Annual Show will just have opened its doors!
Beside the show itself there will be plenty to inspire visitors.
Note:
Repotting/potting season: there will be a great range of pots for sale. No kidding.
Planting season = creative season. There will also be a great range of plants for sale, beside lovely 'finished' bonsai created by local artists.
That's the truth, and nothing but the truth.

Vendors this year are Samarkand Pottery (James Tranter), Canberra Bonsai Studio (Grant Bowie), Bonsai World (Ashley from Jilliby), Tree Makers (Hugh Grant) and the club sales table.
Three others fell victim to covid-19 regulations. :crybye:

Hi all,

I am packed and ready for the show, both display trees and Bonsai for sale plus
A range of Masakuni tools. Great tools from a great Japanese tool maker.
A small range of small painted Tosui pots. Lovely little pots for shohin bonsai or just display.
A large range of small Bigei pots. He seems to have come out of retirement and is making pots again. There are even some now 30cm in size plus their be Dragons!
A full range of Copper and Aluminium wire and more.

Cheers,

Grant
