The detail for the size of these trees was amazing. This display was another crowd favourite.

What an awesome display. This is what someone like me aspires to do. It is a great example of a hobby gone mad and possibly some hobbyists too! I am very happy to join and be part of the madness too.

Re: SA Bonsai Society Show 2020 photos
Hi guys,, im going out on a limb here and hoping that the Chinese Elm root over over rock I purchased at the show has a previous artist/owner on this forum or maybe someone that may know him/her? Im just after some history on my new baby if possible, ie, fertilizer type/ schedule, and hours of full sun vs shade etc.. .
Id like to make the transition as less stressful as possible for it if I could, or is that going to far?

Post a photo of your new baby (maybe start a new thread so it all stays together). Chinese elm are quite tough and grow well here so I wouldn't stress too much - full sun, organic fertiliser every couple of weeks and you should be right.

Re: SA Bonsai Society Show 2020 photos
Thanks for taking the time to post the photos Greg. I actually didn't get a chance to spend much time in the display area this year. Too many punters wanting to buy trees, pots, wire.....

Will do,, will try take a worthy pic tomorrow and start a thread for it tomorrow. I got some handy advise from Matt Sharp today after his demonstration
and a guy i met there about protecting the root and not letting the rock get too hot during high sun days with a wet rag. Looking forward to watching it grow.

A slightly different angle to get a plain(er) background.

Thanks for the photos Greg! I really liked the presentation of the pear. I would have hoped to see some Casuarina but alas...

Re: SA Bonsai Society Show 2020 photos
Yes I'd definitely like to see some more natives - one callistemon, one banksia and a handful of PJs is a good start but we need more! I think that, like the fruiting plum, seeing a tree that people see every day, like a eucalyptus, would help people relate to the trees a bit more. The cape cotton bushes are all very impressive, but nobody's ever heard of that plant so there's a bit of a disconnect there.

My favourite was that fruiting plum and one of the Aleppo pines. I also picked up a huge trunked ash for $45! I got there maybe 2 min after opening and it was packed with people so it was nice to see such interest from the general public.

What a really SUPER show! Good on you, SA bonsai artists, for managing so well in this coviid-19 time. Here in Canberra, we are well aware of the extra work this costs!
I am particularly interested in the penjing section you had. Are there any more photos you could post? How did you come to take on penjing?
