Hey Grant - I know you said at the start that you don’t own them or have access to them.... but whatever you source - they clearly have one hell of a collection! Thanks for the posts.

Some of the pots are at local monthly Bonsai and pot auctions in Japan, some are for sale through dealers. I have a Japanese friend who is working at the auctions.

Agree - beautiful; and given the mountains in the background I might even drop in one of my group plantings. Ha! Pot many $1000’s ... my bonsai - not so much! A bit like a renovators delight on a beautiful block ... work to do on the tree not the pot.Image

Grant
Sorry to heist the post but can you identify anything on this pot. I got it given to me by a female friend while she was in japan some years ago.

Matthew, try this blog https://japanesebonsaipots.net/chop-and ... -resource/ it can take a while to work thru the list and if your like me multiple attempts before you find what you got. He also offers chop ID via email if you prefer that over wading thru the extensive list.

I have never seen anything like the first pot. (1st three photos) Semi- Glazed and painted yet very rugged and interesting looking.

That first pot is very interesting - it seems to be an imitation of enamel ware, with colour areas outlined by solid bands, which would be copper or silver in the original. Lovely pot. I'll expect it for Christmas.

That first one is wonderful. It looks like there are at least three layers of glaze or oxide just in the top band, with perfect control of the running to blend them. Temperature control something like 5degC at 1200degC, from the looks of it. Very fine.
