New display stand

Post by shibui »

I found myself with a little extra time recently. A couple of rainy days meant outside work was just a little uncomfortable so I spent some time in the shed. Most of the components were already cut so I just needed to make the joints, sand and glue up.

It has now had a couple of coats of oil and is ready for use.

Base and trim is red gum. Not sure what timber the main top is but when I saw the fiddleback grain I knew it deserved to be something special.

It may look a little like Silky oak but is quite different to any other silky oak I have worked with. Appears to be some sort of Eucalypt to me.

This time I've used the fiddle back timber for the trim and legs. Top and stays are Victorian blackwood.

Nice work, very elegant. How are the leg joints secured? If you tell me, will you need to kill me after?

All joints rely on accurate cutting for good contact and a good glue. The leg struts help take a lot of stress off the corner joints.
If anyone has any other practical ideas for small joints I'd be very happy to hear. :)

Hi Neil, last year I made this little stand out of camphor laurel left-over pieces from another project.
DSC_0001e.JPG

I "cheated" a little by reinforcing the glued leg braces with screws. I figured in the normal course of viewing a tree on this stand the underside can't be seen anyway.

I am super impressed Neil with your stands. It's motivated myself to make a couple as well. I was fighting my way through the Saturday ALDI crowds and scored a table saw. Hopefully i dont loose a couple of fingers and end up with a couple nice stands
