Howdy all,

I just wanted to show off the new daiza i'm working on for a friend of mine...the wood is nothing special/just some bunnings pine, but i think its turned out pretty well thus far aside from it perhaps being a bit too thick...but there wasnt much of a choice with the position of the stone that he wanted. I think it sort of works since its such a chonky and vertical stone though...

I still have to refine and round the bead off and add another round to the squareish edge below it as well as do the feet and obvious staining/waxing/finishing stuff to it.

constructive criticism or ideas as to the style of the feet would be very welcome!

From the little I know about daiza the feet are usually carved into the piece of wood, however if you are going to "after market" fit them you might want to consider thin feet to match the contours of the daiza set in a fraction.
Looking good though.

I've always made the feet from the piece. Hard to tell how deep the hollowed section is but looks like there should still be enough timber left to make the feet as part of the piece. That will obviously reduce the chunkiness.
Rounding the lower edge will also lighten the depth a bit.

That's a very nice piece of rock. Reminiscent of the sea stacks along the southern coast.

I'll definitely be making the feet from main piece rather than gluing them on seperately, though i'm still not quite sure on what style of foot to go with for it yet. I know what you mean about the rock itself though! i'm a little jealous its not mine to be honest haha

Not a huuuuge update but i refined the carving for the lip around the stone and have started to create the rounding on the outer edge by carving in a series of bevels and then splitting the difference between them a few times...

its a little unconventional but i think i might keep the first bevel intact rather than blending it into the others when it comes time to sand things as i'm quite liking the extra interest it adds....i think i'll attempt the feet tomorrow

Just a small update tonight and an appeal for some aesthetic input...

I've finally roughed out the feet, trying to position each one under a visually weighty area of the rock, but i'm a little uncertain of whether the feet should be higher/the gaps in between them raised up and/or whether i should try to slim them down a bit more.

I still need to refine the curve that transitions from the bottom edge into the feet but i was also contemplating maybe cutting a shallow bead in along this edge as well to tie in with the lip around the rock? The keen eyed might be able to make out my rough pen marks showing the position and width of it along the bottom edge.

I think the feet are a good width but I'd carve further into the wood to make them a bit longer and lighten the weight of the daiza body.
Some sort of moulding/bead on or just above the feet will also lighten them even more.

Another small update tonight as i forge ahead on my little project....

Although i didnt make any drastic changes to the feet beyond refining some of their curves a little, i ended up spending a few hours after work today roughing in the beaded moulding around the base of the daiza.

It still needs to be refined and rounded over slightly but i think it helps tie the overall look together a little more.

Howdy all, hopefully you're not all sick of this thread by now, but i just wanted to share the latest update;

After spending an embarrassingly large amount of time sanding out tooling and layout marks and a few more hours shaping and sanding the bead around the base, the visible areas of the daiza are now finished!

All thats left now is to finish off the underside and finally move onto staining and finishing it.

I have really enjoyed the progress updates and I think it looks great now. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Wellllllll, after spending far more time than expected building up layers of stain and shellac and trying to avoid sanding through them between coats, its finally done!

Excuse the messy background, it was the only spot in the house with some decent light to show the colour off properly.

Once the shellac and todays waxing have fully hardened off later in the week i might give it another wax to get the shine looking a little deeper and more uniform, but all in all i'm pretty happy with it.

Old thread i know, but i stumbled on some better photos of the finished stand today while i was cleaning out my phone's archive and thought some of y'all might like to see
