Hmm, gutsy move. But, on the but side:
1 Nabari appears to be really improved
2 That will certainly get/give you taper
3 You now have the choice of a larger tree or a shohin
4 You could wire the long skinny trunk if you wish
5 The options are increased and interesting

Couple weeks on from the chop and this tree is budding every where from the base to right out along the lone unpruned branch/leader. :tu:

A lot of growing and constant removal of backbuds on the trunk, I should probably thin the remainders to 1 at each point but I have been waiting to see which gives the best line for each.

Think it's time to go back in Elmer ... before it gets out of control!
Great growth, look forward to your next move... could probably refine the initial cut site now to improve transition given you have branches at the ready? Your call... nice though!

Elmer shall hence forth be known as Lusty Claret Tops.

I style Bonsai naturally, just as they would appear in the wild.

That's hardcore ...
Gutsy move but you had a healthy tree to start with so you gave it every chance in that respect. Look after it now, I have my :fc: but I'm not sure you need it. Nevertheless, good luck!

Thanks mate, I am lucky to have a good teacher who has reassured me that it should bounce back no problems. It's all in the aftercare apparently, part sun and water daily twice if it's a hot day, even if the soil is wet, once new growth is extending it can go out to full sun again.

Hi John, expecting mid 20's with overnight lows in the high teens for the next week and probably another 4-6weeks at least, winter is usually short and mild here.
