[NATURAL] Sydney Blue Gum - RustyK

Post by Rustyck »

Species: Eucalyptus saligna “Sydney Blue Gum”
Trunk: 6mm
Source: Bonsai World
Cost : $4
My Skill Level: Low

I have to thank Rory, he has definitely triggered an appreciation for Eucs, I’m currently playing with some Corymbia Citriodora but they are a little too small or a little too big for this comp.
Now I’m spotting Gums left right and centre!

Probably the one I’m more excited about out of my entries atm, I saw some of the workshop blue gums they have at bonsai world and I’m in love with the bark peel.

Hi Rusty,

Great choice of material. This will thicken really fast.
Don’t be shy to try Corymbia citriodora in this comp if you like it. Once they establish after a root prune, they also thicken quite fast.

I hope to have photos of the contest prizes in the main thread by tomorrow.

Eucalyptus crebra is another awesome candidate with its smallish leaves, but the colours on Saligna is so iconic :)

Good luck

Going well so far

This one give a bit of a droop if I’ve neglected but springs back in 5 mins after a good water

Little worries about the first trunk transition as from the back it’s a bit thicker and a little reverse taper but hoping it thickens out with letting it grow

Just under 2 cm for interest

Letting this one grow top heavy to thicken up the trunk and reduce the reverse taper at the curve... hoping that will sort it out!

Haven't been logging on since Tapatalk stopped working with Ausbonsai, so first time uploading photos not using its automatic resizer. so sorry if the quality isn't good...

thought this one died whilst I was away.
all the leave dried up and were dead when I got back.

luckly, its shot back every where as you will be able to see by the photo!

Had good photos of them all dead on an old phone that I didn't keep sadly...

After this one has recovered from its temporary ailments it’s been coming back, I feel that I should chop it and start work on the structure but as the branching is now all new it’s been sitting there getting fed...
any feedback would be welcome! And ideas for creating an apex eventually too, that’s something I haven’t had to do as yet.

Still deciding on the front as the structure has changed... it the upper fork, was thinking of utilising or chopping somewhere below it
