These have been planted as a twin arrangement about 3-4 weeks ago. Entering now as one has some new growth.

The big one is less than 1cm below the lignotuber.

I love these will be interesting to watch it develop.

Yeah I wanted it ever since I saw the red box polyanthemos but realised it had gigantic leaves. Not sure about this ones mature leaves but it appears nice and I also saw some potted examples as feature pot plants on Pinterest. Hopefully I’ll be able to make something of them.

April update: planted in small mesh pot in the ground. Some new growth at the top and base. At the moment I’m just working on fattening both trunks so have only styled to get smaller trunk in a similar direction to the other. I wanted to do this without risking wire cut in so I made a wire cage as opposed to using conventional bonsai wiring technique.

October Update: I’ve done nothing

April update: still a twin planting for now but one has done better than the other. I think some eucalypts don’t like to be planted near others of the same variety as I’ve seen this with eucalyptus seedlings, where one eventually becomes dominant while the rest slowly die and disappear.

I’m trying to fatten the main trunk as I’m pretty sure the small trunk will die, so I’ve just wired it for some movement and left all the top growth and put it back in the ground.

This eucalyptus has been having leaf colour change for a while now but has recently got worse a bit faster, probably because I changed its position in the grow bed (it’s in a basket pot). I thought it was some kind of dirt or oil run off from the slat wall but it turns out it’s return of the tiny caterpillars!

The browning is the leaf slowly dying while it becomes skeletonised. Please let me know if my pictures aren’t showing correctly as I’m using tapatalk again.

Have noticed a few of my natives are getting munched at the moment too. Hard to find those caterpillars sometimes.

I find them much easier to locate at night, just take a torch outside. This seems to be when they feed more openly, possibly due to less predictors out. sawfly larvae (spitfire caterpillar?) seem to quickly strip leaves down to the skeletal remains around my yard, usually in a pack on the underside of the leaf. Goodluck.

October 2020 update:


Have not done much here. It got eaten by grubs and moved to a sunnier part of the grow bed where it sulked for a while but now is pushing new growth everywhere, even on the existing branches up high. The small one is still tiny but I don’t think I will keep this as a double planting.

I haven’t done much but left a branch down low to go wild and trimmed the rest as the growth was very long over summer. No more caterpillar attacks so far. The smaller of the two plants seems to be definitely inhibited by the larger and it may not be included in the final product.
