(A Forest Tale) Raging Bull, Mixed Natives

Post by Raging Bull »

It's been a few months since I rounded up these wayward trees to enter into this comp., so I thought progression pics may be in order. I have a feeling that trying to put these into a believable landscape/forest setting will be about as easy as herding cats.

Frank, I don't how you'll pull it off but I am gong to enjoy watching the attempt. ;)
In Victoria we have the rather amazing Royal Botonic Gardens in Cranbourne - a wonderful landscape of natives.
It's hard to get great photos of the expanse and how they shows natives but there may be some inspiration in the photos... this link may help .... https://www.finegardening.com/article/s ... -australia
In my mind - a dry river bed could work for mixed natives but given you reside in more lush climes ... perhaps something more exotic is in your mind.

After constructing the container for my mixed natives forest, as detailed in a previous post, and filling it with growing medium I've finally got around to actually putting some plants into it. My excuse for not doing it earlier was that it was winter (or what passes as winter here in Qld) or the non- growing season, and the soil had to settle.
I had a variety of natives, mostly ones with very small leaves like leptos and melaleucas with a baeckea in for good measure. The larger leaved ones, banksia and eucalypts were omitted in the final cut, they just didn't look right with so much larger leaves. The actual setting is Flinders Ranges inspired with the red and yellow layers of rock.

I'm also starting to add a bit of ground cover to be followed by smaller stone chips to give it a rugged type of landscape look.

The stone chips and ground cover will be needed as I've noticed that if I'm not careful with the watering the soil starts to wash downhill. The next step will be the continued refinement of the shapes and sizes of the trees so they blend together and look as natural as possible in this little landscape.
Cheers, Frank

Yeah - something special taking place here Frank; especially given the mixed nature of the planting - I am not sure I would be so bold as to attempt a mixed planting but you and others are inspiring with your work! Looking forward to the continued tongues updates. Excellent stuff.
