Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize 2021

Post by NBPCA »

NATIONAL BONSAI AND PENJING COLLECTION OF AUSTRALIA
Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize 2021

The Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize 2021 is designed to encourage the appreciation of the art of bonsai pottery and to highlight the beauty and functionality of bonsai pots. The beauty and style of the pot adds to the aesthetics, the emotions evoked and to the way a bonsai is styled and maintained.

The Challenge
Create a bonsai pot for a Water gum, Tristaniopsis laurina (as pictured below). The Water gum, donated by Ray Nesci of NSW, dates back to 1988 and has been in training for the last 31 years. The tree was grown from seed and styled as a root over rock.
Tree dimensions are 500mm tree height from the soil, 500mm wide, 500mm front to back. The nebari (root flare – including the rock) is 140 mm wide.

The dimensions of the current pot should not be used as a guide, but for reference, the dimensions are as follows:
Inside: 330mm W x 240mm d x 55mm H
Outside: 380mm W x 290mm d x 75mm H

Bonsai Pot Display
Pots submitted will form a Bonsai Pot Display at the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia from Monday 22 March to Sunday 28 March 2021*. Pots will be exhibited during Bonsai Reshaped 26 - 28 March 2021, where Australian native trees and Australian artists feature alongside the beauty of Japanese traditional arts. From hands on workshops to demonstrations and discussion forums, learn more about the ancient arts of bonsai, kusamono, ikebana and bonsai ceramics, which all focus on subtle elements that enhance nature and seasonal beauty. Onsite and online tickets available.

If last year's competition is anything to go by, this will again be hotly contested by many of Australia's bonsai potters.

Don't forget a selection of all entries will be on display for everyone to see in the lead up and during our Bonsai Re-Shaped event 26-28 March 2021.

Cheers

Please keep in mind that the above photos show the tree sitting behind the pot, so not necessarily the best indicator of actual sizes.
Thank you very much to all of the entrants and those that have donated their creations to the Collection. Congratulations to the winners. As mentioned, all pots are on display at the NBPCA this week for all of our visitors to see. We look forward to doing another great prize next year.

Cheers
Leigh

Wow what a fantastic and broad submission of pots! Such diversity and craft-person-ship from our wonderful Aussie potters! :aussie:

Congratulations to the worthy winners :hooray:

Aside from these, I do especially like Justin Fitzgerald's pot – very edgy! Also Pat's turquoise little number is the goods too!

Thanks for sharing Leigh!
Cheers, Ryan

Interesting to see such a wide range of styles, and confidence and elegance. It's always an interesting balance between something that the potter may enjoy making, with strong lines or complex textures, and something that will sit relatively unobtrusively under a tree.

I think the pot by Alex Anfilof is just amazing; not necessarily the right pot for the tree, but a fabulous creation in its own right
