[ID] pot (pre 1950's?)

Post by cre8ivbonsai »

Hi all, I've had this pot for almost as long as I've had bonsai. It's origins as I understand them are: I got it from my mother, she got it from her mother (my grandmother), who says it was her first husbands (my maternal grandfather) who passed away 1952. She also believes he got it from his parents (though this part is a bit hazy). It has a beautiful glaze, but only has a single identifier; a number 3 (could this be a 'Go' number?). I have had a few suggestions over the years, but investigations had no result. Hopefully someone here has some idea :fc: Thanks, Ryan.

Dimensions: pot rim diameter 22cm, height 12cm.

Lovely Pot Ryan,
Check with Lindsay Farr - his knowledge about pots is amazing.

I would say its not a bonsai pot and not Japanese. Probably a flower pot .

the quality of the pot looks very good Ryan. However I have to agree, I think it was made as a planter.
the number is usually a sign that is has come from a Chinese factory, as they still number in some factories today.
but it will look gr8 and who cares what it was made for prior.

Thanks Brian and Joann, yeah confident it was never made as a bonsai pot, but would look good one day with big bunjing in it

Thanks Rudi, I'll try to remember next time I head down to Bonsai Farm, haven't been there for a while.
Cheers, Ryan

After a bit more research I'm inclined to think it was made by Bennett Pottery (South Australia), found a couple of other pottery pieces (1920s-1930s) with similar forms and very similar glazes. Also makes sense because they all lived in Springfield (South Australia) for many years.
