Hi Rory
Personally I wouldn't turn any of these away, but my choices are 1,9 , 11 , 17 and19 . I like 11 as I can see a nice Mel in it . Great thread you've started here.

Hi Rory,
2,4,9,13 & 17. Texture and colour for 4&9, the vibrancy of 17 & 2 and tone and shape of 13. Wish I had trees for them. Amongst this lovely bunch are 11 round, 3 oval, 1 free form oval, 4 rectangle and a free form.

Exactly. Once there is a top 5, I'll post the potters. Hopefully there is a clear top 5.Boics wrote:This would be a really good option for some of the local potters to gauge the wider interest in glazes and styles.
It's interesting to see that our views don't appear to be "random" and that a few standouts are starting to show.

Gday. Actually, its probably the angle of the photos but the pot shapes are:orpy wrote:Hi Rory,

8 round
4 rectangle
6 oval
2 free form
I am a little surprised by the results at the moment.

Yeah I adore blue pots too. Pot 15 is an absolutely stunning pot. I agree a rough barked literati would be a great compliment.Beaumatsu2 wrote:The blue in 2 and the speckled blue in 10 are fantastic. I could see myself using that for a large JBP literati that I have.
Yeah, same. The photo doesn't do it justice.peterb wrote:Hi Rory

I picked 2,3,4,9 and 11.
I chose 11 as I would love to put a eucalyptus in it, to me it resembles piles of dead gum leaves on the ground in the bush.

So at the time of writing this post the top 5 pots by vote were:
1st Place: Australian - Marie Hewartson
2nd Place: Australian - Pat Kennedy
3rd Place: Australian - Pat Kennedy
4th Place: Australian - Joann
5th Place: Japanese - Izumiya
For those that may have noticed, there were 10 Japanese tokoname pots, and 10 Australian pots made by Australian potters.
I Had no idea that there would be 4 Australian pots in the top 5 and only 1 Japanese Tokoname.
I am quite proud to see that of all the users who voted, the overwhelming majority prefer the home grown pots.
Of course the Japanese pots are very beautiful, in fact I think number 15 by Keishin is the most beautiful Tokoname pot I have ever seen.
It might be interesting to see what this thread would get if Japanese users were to be included.
Special mentions have to go to the Aussie pots:
1. is one of my favourite aussie pots of all time. A solid drum pot by Pat Kennedy.
4. is such a beautiful medium pot, with the most gentle colours.
6. another of my favourite aussie pots of all time.... say no more... Pat Kennedy
9. Well, the tribe has spoken on this one, definitely a legendary pot. Marie H.
11. I was saddened to see this beauty by Graham not getting more votes. Perhaps it was the lighting
12. PK... I love the feel and look of his ash glazes
14. Another pot that I felt was under voted on. This one is just stunning, by Penny Davis. It will make any native look
16. This is a diamond in the rough. It has a very lovely glaze and is going to look beautiful with a casy in it. One of Janets best.
18. The colours of this pot by Denise is mind blowing. The teal / aqua colouring is just stunning.
19. This glaze is as I've said before, the greatest glaze I think I've ever seen. Joann said that it is made by repeating the glaze again and again.
For the Japanese pots:
2. has the most lovely blue
3. is perfectly made, so flush
5. needs better lighting to show it off
7. has a lovely natural look that will compliment our natives.
10. is the fancy sparkly pot. very cute.
13. is wood fired so the colours are what makes this one stand out.
15. is one of the greatest Japanese pots of all time. Keishin makes the best Japanese Tokoname pots I've ever held.
17. the warm shape and colour of this one is just stunning
20. Keisin... just lovely.
So, remember to support our potters. The tribe has spoken on the top 5. All the aussie potters' details are included on each of their pots.

Well, that was a bit of fun!
Congratulations to Marie...she always has been a great potter, and thanks to Rory for having the time to set this up. I, for one, will be taking a lot from the results!!
I had no idea that there so many Japanese pots in the group...I thought maybe, one.
One slight criticism if I may. I feel for ALL the potters who didn't have any say in the pots that were shown. They didn't get to choose their pots and may think, quite rightly I feel, that they are judged on pots that don't necessarily show their true skills.
But still, it was fun and educational and I don't want to take away for an instant the kudos to Marie...well deserved and well done!!
So thanks again Rory...long may you have the time to keep the rest of us on the edge of our seats
Cheers,
Pat

What a good idea of Rory's to showcase all the different styles and some home grown talent.
It was very encouraging to find, 4 out of the top 5 pots were made by Australian Potters.
Thank you again

I didn't think of it from that angle. To be honest when I started this thread I was only interested in the outcome of whether there would be any Australian pots in the top 5. I probably should have said.... A random selection of pots that Rory likes.
I acquired all the Aussie pots as you can imagine because I think they are all number 1 in my eyes which is why I bought them.
Perhaps we now need the iron potter competition round 2?? With just Aussie pots. but I had fun putting the Aussie pots vs the Japanese pots. I think I love pots too much, cause it was a lot of fun reading this thread.
If people want an Iron Potter round 2, or others like this type of thread / idea , perhaps we could do more. Then the top 5 preferred would progress to the next stage and etc etc, so more and more variety of pots are showcased for a greater competition.
I felt that using the same background for the pots was equal footing, otherwise it would be just whichever pot looks better refined from a google image search which seemed boring to me.
