NBPCA Australian Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize - 2020

Post by NBPCA »

Hi Everyone

I am very excited to announce the Inaugural NBPCA Australian Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize.

The Bonsai Pot Acquisition Prize is to encourage the appreciation of the art of bonsai pottery and to highlight the beauty and functionality of bonsai pots. The beauty and style of the pot adds to the aesthetics, the emotions evoked and to the way a bonsai is styled and maintained.

Create a bonsai pot for the Agonis flexuosa (as pictured below), winner of the National Bonsai and
Penjing Collection of Australia (NBPCA) Native Bonsai Acquisition Prize 2019. This tree was
raised from a seed and nurtured for 26 years by Annalea Smith.

Tree dimensions are 850mm tree height from the soil, 850mm wide, 750mm front to back. The
nebari (root flare) is 240mm wide and the trunk above the nebari is 100mm.

The dimensions of the current pot should not be used as a guide, but for reference, the dimensions are as follows:
Inside: 380mm w x 265mm d x 120mm h
Outside: 445mm w x 330mm d x 150mm h

The competition is open to Australian residents. Entry is free. Entrants may enter more than 1 pot, but each pot must have a separate entry form, terms and conditions will apply to each pot individually. Prizes will be awarded to three pots ($1000, $600, and $400 prizes). The competition will run in conjunction with Bonsai Week 2020 (23-29 March 2020), the winning entries announced at the Bonsai After Hours event on Friday evening 27 March 2020. An exhibition of entries will be run during Bonsai Week. If entrants wish to advertise their business or trading name alongside their entry during this exhibition, please provide those details on the entry form below. Due to limitations in display space and not knowing how many entries we will get, we cannot guarantee all entries will be on display at the same time. We may have to rotate the display to ensure as equal exposure for all pots as possible.

This competition is sponsored by the NBPCA Bonsai Trust Fund. Prize winning pots will be acquired by the NBPCA and may be used in the Collection or sold at auction to raise money for the Bonsai Trust Fund. The NBPCA reserves the right to use the winning pots any way management see fit. Entrants of non winning entries have the option to donate their pot to the NBPCA Bonsai Trust Fund to be auctioned.

Here are the terms and conditions and entry form:

Hi Alexa

Agonis flexuosa have tightly clustered inflorescences of small white flowers in the axes that appear between August and December.
We have only recently acquired this tree and as of yet we have not seen any flowers.

The tree is within the Collection, but not presently on display. We are aiming to have the tree on display by the time Bonsai Week 2020 arrives.

Regards
Leigh

Well, this is very exciting!!
As I well know, grass root potters manage to live on next to nothing so with prizes like this potters will be coming out of the woodwork to try for a prize. I expect there will be potters from every genre making ‘bonsai pots’ and some ideas will be amazing.... perhaps even enough to satisfy Charliegreen....

Look forward to seeing this one play out!
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Hi Everyone

Thanks for all of the comments. It is a great opportunity for the bonsai potter community to come together and show their creations. I hope that we have a number of entrants who are taking up the challenge. If you are a potter and feel a little intimidated by entering, please remember that entry is free and all pots will be on display at one time or another in front of thousands of visitors to the National Arboretum during Bonsai Week 2020.

Cheers
Leigh

Hi Everyone

Obviously it is very difficult to reach all bonsai potters (or other potters who would like to have a crack at a bonsai pot) to inform them of this competition. Please help me to spread the word. It would be great to get as many participants as possible.

Thanks in advance - Leigh

Hi Everyone

I hope you are all busy getting your ideas together. It will be great to see how different potters have interpreted the brief. It should make for a very interesting display during Bonsai Week 2020.

Cheers
