Pots glazed on the inside for bonsai

Post by Nicky-llew »

Hi Guys
I managed to drill a 20mm hole on the bottom of a glazed baking dish. Its glazed on the inside and outside. I am trying to grow a bonsai in it. Will it be successful?

I have limited experience with internally glazed pots, but I did buy a maple in a very shallow one that had a clear glaze inside. It certainly wasn’t healthy, though the drain holes were above the lowest level of the pot so it could equally have been that it didn’t like having a water reservoir in the pot.

It will just make air exchange though the pot harder/ virtually impossible depending how tick the glaze is, so it would affect your watering as the water loss is reduced.

Generally I avoid them but if you were using it to hold a rock that a tree was planted into a rock, or as a suiban or to display a rock it would be fine.

When I first started bonsai I was told not to use interior glazed pots. But I do, with no ill effects I put trees that suffer thru the summer heat and like to be on the wetter side into them. They grow fine if your not sure just check before watering.

I can't see why it would be an issue. Plants live fine in plastic pots

High fired pots are fully vitrified thus impervious to water, much the same as glaze :tu2:
