I have not posted for a while as i have been busy with my first passion (Martial Art training) but as every one knows it was my Birthday last month and i received this Chinese pot. At first take i thought it was over the top but then, albeit very sneakily, it started to grow on me. I envisioned it with a very powerful, squat black pine in it. Apparently it is a collectible but i know nothing of pots and it has been used. Firstly i would love the computer virt Artists to shoehorn a pine in there to see what it could look like and secondly...what do people think, Trash or treasure. It was not cheap. Oh, by the way, the stump is an ex Bonsai that unfortunately, as you can tell, died. A privet

I am still learning alot about pots but that is a beauty. Used or not, I would have a hard time putting anything in it so as not to compete.

Your idea of a squat pine could work but it would have to be a heavy gnarled one with lots of character otherwise the pot would outshine the tree and that is not desirable, atleast not in 'bonsai' terms.

Hi Bodhi, thats one ornate pot you have there. I would use something extra simple in that one, maybe a clump of scleranthus as an accent.

....but what to put in it? I can't see a pine in it, no matter how ponderous the tree,..... however,years ago, on the IBC, there was a great kerfuffel over whether banana trees(?) could be considered bonsai-able. This pot was made for a banana!!!! If that leaves you cold, how about a frangipani???

Thanks Pat. It has given me other ideas now. I wonder if a Banana plant would survive in frosty old central Victoria?

im onto it for ya bod i will do a few up with a few different species i think that would work JBP will work well, i think yamadori style shimpaku would too

Jamie, that is blinding me with its awesomeness. Fantastic. I reckon number 2 or 4 are the real deal. I think i will be keeping it. My first impulse was to throw it away but it was discreetly pointed out its value and authenticity so i looked at it through different eyes. I am a bit of a novice with pots but it is going to be a further study i'll undertake.

cool mate glad you like em, i reckon your spot on with 2 or 4 being the go. they are corkers. 2 is a JWP very nice tree actually, and 4 is obviously shimp.

getting trees like that might be a little harder than getting the pics though

keep us updated with how you go with it all mate

So this is what i went with. If the pot was loud then the thing in it had to be MUCH louder. Warning..wear sunglasses

Not what i call Bonsai Peter but doing this has made my Wife happy (she bought the pot), the pot is being used and it shows i can grow an Azaelia
