Very good explanation

Suggest we create a list of common actions we do to touch up photos, and create a separate thread for each one so we can easily find them later
Then if someone else want to do the same process for a different application they can just add it as another post to the same thread ?

Suggest we start each thread with a standard name like
"Photo Editing - Clone tool Usage"
"Photo Editing - Removing a branch"
"Photo Editing - Adding Shari"

That's an interesting idea ken. Definately worth some thought.

Pick whichever one you want mate. I was thinking of it as more of an example of the process you would go through to enhance them.

Hi Mitchell
wonderful offer! Although the take up is slow, I'm sure there will be some who will realise what you have offered and take it up.

I would like to take it up. I don't exactly fit your profile of preferred user (I have a little self-taught experience), but there is a technique that I do poorly, or only very labouriously, and maybe you have some ideas on what I could do better.

How does one 'cut out' a tree that has a complex edge and lots of internal 'see through' bits? Or, to put it another way, how best to change the background for such a tree?

How large an image should I post here? The original I could post is about 3MB, so is a bit large for the forum as it will take ages for many to download - not good. Can you work with one say 0.8-1 MB? What size would you prefer to use on the forum?

Cheers

Sorry Kunzea, I missed you post!!

Almost 11 months too late, but something tells me you still have the same question. If not do tell!

Complex foliage is a real issue. Basically I have found that, if you need to be precise you have to do it by hand at high mag and blot the internal structure.

I did a couple of bonsai in the Nat exhibition, which I spent hours and hours blacking out backgrounds from the internals. Also did a few for Steven, which took a while too.
Sorry I do not have a simple solution from this, you can attempt to auto cut it out, but current programs will alter it and change the internal branch structure whilst doing it.
Regards, Mitchell.

Hi Mitchell
Thanks for the comments. It looks like I'm already doing what you do too- slow, bit by bit painting out of the background where the edges are complex. I've also done the kind of tasks you describe, can take an hour or more for large jobs.

Always on the lookout for something that might be easier. You never know when it will turn up.

Cheers

If you download "the gimp" or photoshop (I believe I gave a link to Gimp on the first post), there is a free select tool, which you can zoom the select the edges and cut it out precisely. If you zoom in enough, even if you leave a tad it shouldn't show much.

What program are you using to blot it out with?

If you have not already bought PS, consider "The Gimp" for free. Gimp has an ever growing community, which has bought Gimp near to and past the performance of PS.

Though PS is great if you can afford it, I can't though. :)
