Lumps on my callistemon leaves... Is this normal?

Post by Bek »

Image

Hi all, hoping for some help with a recently purchased Callistemon Viminalis "Red Alert". I planted it into a growing bed a couple of weeks ago and today went to water it and noticed these weird lumps on the leaves. I can't remember them being there when I planted it. Anyone had any idea what it is? I spotted a stray ladybug on it, if that helps.

Hi Ken,

Does it seem to do any harm to your eucalyptus? I'm just worried it's got some parasite or something and it'll cark it

I googled it and I think it might be some kind of scale? Although I've read various treatments from basically giving up on it, to Confidor or pest oil, and another said that the insecticide needed to treat it was only available to 'professionals'. Argh.

Thanks!! Will the confidor tablet things work also do you think? As a preventative measure after I (hopefully) get rid of the current infestation? Hoping so.. I'm about to buy some for my olives now that the weather has warmed up so I'll just add them to these too.

O/T luv them beagles, bek. Have you shown them or bred them? I used to show whippets so we saw quite a few.

Thanks BB. I don't show them, but they both came from breeders who show their beagles. Bailey, the bigger one at the back of my photo, was a show dog for a few months when he was a puppy, before we got him. As he grew, he became a bit too 'long' so there was apparently no point showing him anymore (not that I really wanted to anyway). They're both desexed. Really not interested with the stress/expenses that come with breeding them! :D

Sure looks like Psyllids. Never had them on my ones....but looks identical to the ones common on Lilly-pilly.

Cheers!

Sorry Banksia for the off topic!

I popped into my local horticultural supplies shop today and bought the ready to use Confidor spray, as well as the tablets that go in the soil. Have drenched the callistemon now and will pop a tablet in the soil once it's recovered. Feeling better now, haha

The bubble are called gulls!
Even figs get them...They are caused by various insects.
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

No worries at all Kez! I think we're all guilty of it at one time or another. Then again, if it was your beagles with Psyllids...then I'd be worried!
Like Ken said. Let us know how the spray/tablets go. Although none of my Callistemons have shown these symptons before,...it's always good to know for future reference.

Cheers!

If you want to avoid using confidor, which is way too toxic for me, I use Eco-oil mixed with neem oil. Safe to use and very effective
