now im no expert on the blow torch technique, far from it actually, but from what i can tell with the blow torch and my experiences with them in my trade it is a very fine point of flame, this makes for a very accurate point of contact, the mini torch pup used in the first section looks like a hot devil, its used in trade shops for wiring and suck, the bigger one looks like one that a chef uses for caramelising

im just guessing here but with this tight flame and a steady hand being very careful, minimal protection would be needed as the heat is concentrated on one spot, maybe the size of a five cent piece or smaller.

just my guess anyway, im sure pup will confirm

Yes Jamie, although the bigger one is a benzamatic ( not sure of the spelling and cannot be bothered going out in the rain again ) The one used for brazing copper pipe, and drip trays.
I am just very careful most times you only singe the live area.
Being Australian native it does stimulate growth as well. I have thought about more trunk hollow higher, but will wait to see how this looks with more growth.
It is an ongoing project. Of which I now have a few. Mostly Shohin, will post some later in the week.

Brett they look brutal yes but are quite the opposite. They will not move if the are on soft surface's, such as your hand. They only work on solid surface's.
Also they follow the grain of the wood better and a better to control.
When I want to move large amount's of wood I use the Arbortech angle grinder wheel.
Then finish of with the chisel's then sand, then fire.
They are made here in the west by the mob that made the Lawn mower's for the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony. Based in Malaga Perth.

Chisels do make much better carving, you can always see the difference.
Its a very nice tree old man, very nice transformation. It reminds me of a few she oaks we have up here on the murry river.

This is a follow up on the original post. I was not going to bother because of, I have pressed the wrong button I think OH! Bugger .

I had the camera set up on the tripod with the timer set. Started carving with the Arbortech and Dremel and the the blowtorch and even the Lime sulphur and Sumi ink. As you can see I even wrapped the branches this time, because I was going nearer foliage.

Even showed Jamie how I get rid of the saw dust on top of the soil. Finished I put all the tools away, like a good boy. Went to see my Dr all good news.
So when I got home. Put the pics on the PC. Where have they gone. What I cant work out is there were pics taken between the ones with the foliage wrapped and the last angle.
So they are around in cyberspace if any one sees them please send them home I miss the Bastards . Any way here are the pics that are left.

This was done after quite a bit of thought, it was suggested to me by our OWN FLY bri. As I said plenty of thought, still with Stevens tree's in mind. I hope you enjoy even without the pictorial tutorial.

I'm yet to possess a live casuarina in my collection...... I collected some beauties but they all died . Any secrets???

And the blowtorch, I need to clean some fluffy stuff off a carved swampy and add some colour. How easy is it to use? Any issues I should watch out for??

looking good pup i like the slight angle change aswell, it will be a good move i think. its a shame you lost ya pictures in cyber space, i am wondering if you have checked on ya camera for them...
