Aussie style Penjing

Post by Stevie_B »

Does anyone have a recommendation for a penjing style mountain type setting using Aus natives etc that would suit South East Qld? I could use junipers, but I’d like to see if it was possible to try some natives, or figs too I guess.
Thanks

Alpine art had some great mountain style rock plantings featuring ficus. Figs grow naturally on cliffs and rocks and don't mind getting a bit dry occasionally so it is only natural that they do well planted on rocks. Ficus certainly suit Qld.

Both those are artificial rocks because the real thing would be way to heavy to move. Pretty sure the first with figs is made from villa board glued in layers and the second is polystyrene.

Other than that it would depend what your vision for a 'penjing style mountain setting' looks like. Tall, vertical rocks? Wider, lower mountain? Size? Trees planted on the mountain or around the base?

I hadn’t thought of a casuarina. I don’t know how they would go with an exposed root, or trying to keep it really tight. I will probably start with some figs, but was also thinking about a sygium as well.
Also, am a little unsure about the age of the trees to use. My rock is about 30 cm high about 10 cm wide. Do people use juvenile trees mostly, otherwise they are almost mame size I would assume.
