Love it but to my mind it should look better in a small round pot.

Another vote for the "back" - the intertwined jin and living trunk really work well.

For me the foliage masses look very even, where the trunk is definitely odd! Would you consider breaking up the foliage into smaller (NOT neater!) events that dance around above the trunk?

It's a wonderful tree, and one way to go for Australian natives - not just vague versions of Japanese pines.

Thanks for all the great feedback, just when you think you have It everything gets turned upside down and for that I am very grateful. Even my wife likes the back.....
I choose the present front because of the position of the trunk and apex The photos doesn't really show how big the first bend is. A quick look with the torch and it could be possible. A couple of bends and maybe a branch or two removed.
Tomorrow I will take a photo from above to show the true nature of the bends in regard to trunk placement.
Only a few flowers this year Boics ,I have a pretty big one and let it flower this year. Still picking of seed pods a month latter.. The foliage does look a little fresh ,will take that on board Gavin. Always like the more open natural style. Great species in regards to growth ,very rarely do they stop.
Once again thanks to all, Cheers John.

Hi All ,
As you can see by the two photos the bend kicks out pretty wickedly. I could pull the back branch over the the bend to get the new apex . Also try and bend the tail in the same direction to try and balance the overall look. Any suggestions appreciated, Cheers John.

I can only agree with previous suggestions of making the back the new front and breaking up the foliage mass to look more uneven/rugged so that it matches the trunk line. Whatever you choose to do I really like this one.

John this is a serious tree! great stuff!
just thinking on the basis of maximising design with the character provided ... your front rotated 90 degrees to the left and then tilted probably another 90 upward sort of like that second last photo (close up of base) would make a wicked view of the tree, so much movement man!

Time for an update on this one. Following the discussion last January I decided to push myself and this poor tree. Ever so slowly I began to push it into a upright position .Finally got there ,a little bit of separation of deadwood of the base but otherwise ok. Repotted in December and has been growing wildly .Time to make a few decisions .As you can see it is very confusing , branches and movement going in every direction. Always interested in the views of Aus Bonsai members. As every time I look I get more confused :lost: . Cheers John.

My vote is go back to a raft style.....like it better as it looks more naturally 'tortured". LOL The upright style just looks wrong :imo: Thanks for sharing a great tree.

Definitely dramatic . I like how you can see the twist and turns . But the base draws the eye more than the curls . If I did that up here it would snap off in the first wind that came through . Maybe a prosthetic deadwood at the base to anchor it a bit . Still I think it is very cool .

We at the Vic Native bonsai club went on a dig in October last year and collected quite a lot of these also but we've identified these as Ericoides, I wonder which of us in incorrect in identifying these?

Hi Marcela

K ericoides is endemic to New Zealand so I doubt they are that species.

Thanks for the feedback ,glad it got a reaction :) .The base is a bit eye catching Sno, have an idea that will tone it down a bit . I love the movement but then again there isn't very many straight ones on my benches. Cheers John.
