Mel. linarifolia sprouts everywhere when pruned and occasionally even when it is not pruned so you can cut wherever you like and expect lots of new shoots. Also fast growing and quite resilient. A straight trunk like this one lends itself very well to a broom style bonsai :imo:

True that Neil!

I took your advice and I’m having a crack at a broom... as per Squatjar’s thoughts too.

Crumbs, I chopped and it sprouted everywhere! Perhaps I should have chopped lower but I think this can work .... Image

I have similar responses with M. armillaris.
I think your proportions are OK. By the time the branches have thickened and ramified a little the trunk will also have thickened in proportion.
Just keep trimming regularly to keep the branches ramifying right out to the outline of the intended canopy.

Looking good mate!

My Mel Lin's and M Lin dwarf all shoot like crazy when you lop off branches.

And if you think you might kill something you better get 5 more of each...you know...just in case... ;)

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

Ha! Yes... I noticed you applied this theory in a recent thread and had multiple pots of trunks awaiting new growth. :) Me, with a predisposition to groups plantings, I generally get five or more and bang 'em in one pot :palm:

With the M. Styphelioides, yeah. I wish I bought more... I can always just go back hahaha.

This is the M. Lin I found in the big green shed that went from a 2m straight tree to a stump (couldn't fit it in the car  ).

And here are the dwarfs.

I just realised there hasn't been an update on them for a while... I will get busy snapping photos this weekend.
