Callistemon?

Post by its_kano »

Hi all, my son found this little guy on the edge of a footpath and we potted it up yesterday. I'm assuming a bottle brush? Maybe a leptospermum? He is 7 years old and is happy with his first tree woukd just be nice to I'd it properly. Thanks.

I'll have a guess at Callistemon viminalis. When it flowers we will be able to tell for sure.
Good find.

I guess callistemon too but hard to be sure until it gets a bit bigger because a few species look similar when small like this.
Fortunately it is a good time of year to pot up many natives. :fc: that this one will just keep growing.

Thanks guys, yea time will tell but almost certain callistemon. They like water aye? So I can leave it in this little tray with water? I have seen them growing on the bottom of rivers on our Bush walks locally.

Water does not seem to bother most callistemons. I've kept some in quite deep water for up to 12 months at a time but eventually they do show signs of root problems from too much water. Water just lapping the bottom of the pot should be OK but probably take the tray away in winter to give the roots some air.
