Hi all, I went up to the NBPCA last week, and speaking with Sam he was concerned the Banksia serrata was becoming difficult to water as it was very tightly sitting in its pot and water was taking time to penetrate.
We started by using a scythe to cut along the inside edges of the pot. The final cutting was done with a saw as the pot is very deep.
As. You can see , the roots and trunk are very strong and stable and the soil is still in good condition.
We checked the base of the tree and roughed up the roots there and removed a small amount of root and again everything looked really good.
The pot we chose for the tree is a large, deep , Japanese oval pot . It was a pot I donated to the collection about 10 years ago.
We tried the tree in the new pot. We were happy with it, not over-potted, we put some potting mix in , checked height and orientation then wired it in.
Finally filled with soil and chopsticked in after being moved a little to the right.
The tree will thrive in its new container and under the care of Leigh and Sam at the NBPCA.

I offered to help repot it and Sam accepted , so on Monday we started the work.Banksia serrata. What we did on Monday

That trunk is beautiful, how does a tree that big thrive in such a small pot? Would you water this kind of tree twice a day?

If you take photos in portrait position, they display as landscape. Just one of the joys of life. Take flat long photos -maybe even turn your phone around!
