I want to buy a big Banksia serrata

Post by Grant Bowie »

Hi everyone,

I am after a big Banksia serrata. Anyone got one for sale? Send pics to me on PM. I would prefer one already grown as a bonsai and with plenty of age and girth.

I know Ray Nesci had one sitting on the front bench last week. When i commented on how much i liked it, he replied by saying i could have it for a sum!
I guess the base would have been 30-50cm diameter, mabye even a little more (I would confidently say more but don't want to give a misinterpretation )
It might be worth the trip up :D
Or a call at least !

Grant,

Was there the 19th febuary this year. I know he has two already well established bonsai, but i saw a massive one (base 500-600mm easy,) out the back with branch selection beginning and another smaller one i think, again not sure if any for sale .

Thanks for the various inputs into my search for a Banksia serrata.

By chance and letting my desire for one be known I have been offered a nice old one for free. Free to a good home in effect. It was getting a bit big for the current owner so it sounds like just what I ordered.

I will post it on line a soon as I get it; should be next week.

Atlantic, prebonsai or raw?
And how large shimps do you want?

Took a while but here is a photo of the Banksia I was given last April.
RIMG3547.JPG
I let it grow quite freely after the trim and occasionally trim it back

I repotted it last week and leaned it a little to the left to give it a bigger base spread. It stands about 90cm from base of pot to the top of the tree.

Thanks to Ruth for the gift of the tree.

Here is the tree after repot. In a deeper ochre pot that I think suits the banksia.

Glimpse of my bonsai compound in the background.

They are somewhat reduced over the natural size but the leaves on this B serrata are very thick and leathery with a slight twist at the tip. They will reduce further in the future.

I have seen some down in Melbourne with leaves about 40mm long, about half what they currently on my new B serrata, and smoother and no twist.

There seems to be a lot of variation in the B serrata from different seed sources.

Grant.
