I gotta say, I disagree with this. You can get first class bonsai from any of the above methods! It's the tree/artist combination that determines whether or not it's first class. If you have a tree wth lots of potential, and an artist who is willing and able to unlock it... there it is!ozzy wrote:I think this thread has reinforced what I already feared all along ... forget about collecting, forget about nursery stock, the only way to get a first class bonsai is to start from scratch, so its back to the drawing board I guess

as far as wild looking juni's go you are spot on brother, and the rest ya not far off. so get cracking!!!
there is some great stuff out there that will cost you! it will need major fault rectifying and in alot of cases complete over hauls. but it is a head start on starting from scratch if you can afford the cost verses the effort.

early days still for that statement "first class bonsai" from you. your measuring stick is different to ours. what you think has potential now will change vastly in years to come. that is if you learn the lessons and are still in it.

Certainly is early days for me! However, I doubt I will ever disregard anything from ever becoming "first class" unless reared from seed.anttal63 wrote:early days still for that statement "first class bonsai" from you. your measuring stick is different to ours. what you think has potential now will change vastly in years to come. that is if you learn the lessons and are still in it.
Surely you would also agree that a first class bonsai could come from a variety of places, not only from seed-reared bonsai?

I agree with Ant, till you have seen true world class trees in the flesh (bark ), how do you know what to judge as world class. I think we are getting in the right frame of mind to develop them but many years away still!

Amen! I know this is true for me even now after just two years of reading and viewing.
I really do wish they'd hurry up and grow.

Your expectations may rise but the fact remains as Japh seems to imply that first class bonsai can come from dare I say any material. Just some material will have a much shorter path to become a masterpiece.

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Re: How to grow good bonsai stock like the Japanese nurseries
There is a helluva lot of Japanese European American, Bonsai that have to be thrown away then, as most of what Kimura, and Walter works on is collected.
Then they are artist, are they not Ozzy. I have had the pleasure, of working on stock collected from Japanese and European mountains. Having done so I can tell that when you do then you will understand.
Cheers Pup
