Early last autumn I took a large root cutting from a Chinese elm ( about as thick as my thumb and 25cm long) which I wrapped around a rock, covered in spagnum moss and planted in a large pot of good mix. It had a good healthy covering of fine feeder root on it. It’s still green and looks healthy, but has not sprouted any shoots.
1. How long should it take?
2. Can I encourage it to shoot?
3. Will it shoot?

Re: Chinese elm root cutting
I would have expected to see shoots by now if it was going to.
I don't know of anything you could do that might help and it is probably not going to.
I have better results with spring root cuttings. early ones seem to get infected with something over winter and don't shoot but mine usually shrivel up and die if they are not going to grow.

Re: Chinese elm root cutting
This is definitely very healthy. Has not shrivelled or shown signs of rot. Just have to wait and watch I guess. I might try grafting a few buds on to it.
