Hey!
After some repotting ive found curl grubs in the soil of a few of my trees. A friend at work says that submerging the pot in water for a few hours is a good way to drown them out.
Anyone have any experience with this? Or know a good way to kill without repotting?
Mostly growing ficus in Sydney.

Try Yates grub kill and protect also grub killa works. Sprinkle on the surface and water in, I found it brings them to the top. Then you can feed the to the birds.

I believe Parliament house ground staff treated the lawns there for curl grubs and ended up with lots of dead magpies. Maybe don't feed pesticide affected grubs to the birds
The insecticides definitely work though.

I doubt that dunking in water will eliminate curl grubs. Certainly doesn't get rid of ants in the pots. Many insects can hold enough air close to their skin to stay alive while submerged for some time.

There are some older threads on Ausbonsai covering curl grubs. Try the search button and see what comes up. I seem to recall that some growers find inorganic mix helps and maybe zeolite in the mix????

Check through my notes. Yes shibui is correct. What I found is I used diatomite in the mix, it messes up their internals which forces the to the surface then you can feed’em to the birds

Curl grubs hatch into beetles which can climb and fly. Mesh might stop grubs entering the pot but grubs don't seem to move far anyway. It won't stop the females laying eggs in your pots.

I vaguely remember someone on this forum threw some curl grubs into a bucket of water then forgot about them for days. They didn’t die.

Use an inorganic mix ( or a mix of more than 50%) and you will not get curlgrubs and not have to use pesticides to control them
Diatomite, Pumice, Scoria, Akadama, Kanuma or blends thereof will work

I have soaked pots with them in for 2 days and they were still alive!

Wasn’t there a problem with using Diatomite? Something to do with it affecting bees and other beneficial insects? Or am I getting confused (again).

You are a long way from home here on Ausbonsai but we'll try to help.
How to get rid of something often depends on what the thing is.
If you can post a picture of the strange insects and the bonsai we'll try to ID and give advice.
