Reached step 8 and and the roots are looking great.. gave them a small trim and untangle and back into the pot for the rest of the year....
The original cuts are almost healed and it's probably gained 25mm since september.Image

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but will this work on a tree that already has roots but needs taper?

That's basically how my tree started.
But after about a year i wasn't happy with the results so i chopped off all the original roots extended my splits up the trunk and started again, this was around July 2017. And you can see in my last post how far the roots have come since then...

EDIT: just reread my old post from july and it says i chopped off all the old roots around january 2017.

Quick update on my little ruby.
Decided today was the day to have another look at the roots. I removed a large sacrifice branch from the back and gave it a fresh repot. It's been very slow growing but I am more than happy with the progress in under 3 years.
Hopefully one more year and the splits should have completely grown out(they are much worse from other angles)....

Forgot to get a photo of the root ball but it was substantial.ImageImage

i decided to skip the autumn repot this year to try get some faster thickening at the roots and to speed up the healing of the scars.
Scars are much more noticeable from other angles so lucky this is a pretty great front.
Could have done with another 10 years in the grow pots but i am pretty eager to see what this one looks like once i get the foliage under control.
i am unbelievable happy with the trunk shape, just very slow growing with this species... i have a large pot full of cuttings to get the next generation going over the next few weeks.
theres still some trunk and root flare buried but i will expose them as i decrease pot size over the next couple years.
Current pot by erin..

Surely im not the only one that has had success with this technique... would love to see em if you got em
