Gum leaves dying from tip/edge?

Post by badboybonsai »

Hi all,
hoping someone can help me identify what is happening with my gums.
The leaves are dying from the edge/tips but not completely through the leaf.
Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Windburn maybe? Has it been rather cold and windy where you are?

How is the soil? Is it sopping wet , not draining and not getting enough oxygen?

If so there might be a root problem and might need an emergency repot.

Where do you live, bbb? It helps to know the climate where you are.

In my experience, if gum roots are too wet, rot sets in, all the leaves wilt, and the tree is Gone. I can't eliminate a disease process from here, but have they dried out recently (last few months?) - you can get crispy edges that way. If the growing buds look healthy, the tree should be OK.

What species is it, and how old? It looks to be getting interesting.

I have a leaf issue on my red river gum. Sorry to hijack. It's a dark purple colour. Any ideas. I'm in Canberra.ImageImage

Looks like mites to me - the web can be seen in the first pic.
Yes, the username is misspelled: no, I can’t change it.

I live in Sydney, northern beaches. They did dry out for a day while i was away maybe 4 weeks ago now, that and we have had some cold, strong westerlys that they copped directly before i have moved them to a more secluded location. This tree has some sort of genetic deformity which makes it shoot and grow branches at 90 and even 180 degrees!

The dry out could be responsible. If that is all it was then it will resprout without too much problem, then just cut off the damaged leaves.
Not a recommended method to defoliate.

Are they all this year's growth? If so most likely there would have been a point in time when they were tender leaves that the tree dried out. So the tips didn't get the water. If not this year's leaves only and we're healthy before it is possible you have a caterpillar or similar critter which has eaten through the underside of the leaf. A code up of the underside could help.
