I find if you leave only one leader on it (and just cut the end off this leader), and also trim the rest of the unwanted branches from the trunk off, it then often produces more buds all along the trunk, but its different for different species though.

I hope this helps you. But definitely don't cut more of the branches off from what you've just cut now or you might encourage die back.

So the tree is responding ,I've got three buds in the 'Goldilocks ' zone .
I did the root work today . I removed any roots that could become problematic . It has a nice fibrous root system . I'm still growing the trunk so I don't want to take too much root off it at this stage . I took off about half .

I have put it into a shallow water tray in a cold glass house to recover . I'm still getting the odd frost ( another forecast next Tuesday ) so I'll protect it till it starts pushing strong growth and then I'll chop it back to the ' Goldilocks ' zone .

HI JP I can't make the Nov meeting but I will be at the Dec meeting .im hoping to bring a kunzea I've been working on that if the timings right it should be in full flower . Maybe see you then .

So with a week of warm weather predicted and the tree pushing good growth, time to chop . I've put some fert baskets around the outer rim of the pot to accelerate growth of roots . Now it's water and sunshine till next year .

Great documentation of this tree, it's getting some nice movement in the trunk with all your hard work! Just wondering how long you left it in the water bath/glasshouse after the root chop? Was it a time thing or did you wait for visible signs of recovery/growth before moving it out?

Hi Ryceman . A couple of weeks . Basically it was a combination of how the tree was reacting and what Bom was predicting for the weather . It didn't stop pushing growth (I've been rubbing off unwanted buds non stop ) and this has been a glorious spring . This time last year I was getting minus 5 frosts . I had trouble last year , I lost a couple . ouch .

This tree didn’t survive going into a proper bonsai pot . It was quite a major root reduction , it was pushing new growth after the repot so I wasn’t concerned and then it was one of those slow declines . I was a bit surprised with the outcome . But it happens .
