Hi Beano,
Sorry to see that you're having problems with your Rainbow Eucalypt. If you didn't touch the rootball, perhaps you should take it out and wash the roots gently to see if there is a problem you're not aware of. It seems to me that it was relying on the few roots growing out of the collander more than the original rootball.
I've had my triple trunk rainbow gum only for a year and had it only in a fairly shallow grow-pot, but it's doing well. I keep pinching the tips and occasionally pruning back a bit harder but haven't touched the roots since the original re-pot. The pinching back has kept the leaves quite small but the trunks are still thin also. Seeing yours thicken like it has I'm going to let mine go for a while and then cut it back hard.
Hope yours recovers. :fc: Cheers, Frank.

Maybe it’s overpotted? I’ll take a look tomorrow and maybe put it in a regular pot with a water tray instead.

I found with these went you touch the roots you have trim the top especially if you have fresh soft growth it will wilt. Cut it back and it should come good in a few weeks.

Thanks Kirky. Yes there is a tonne of fresh new growth. Might cut it back to that dominant branch since the top has died.

Well I’ve done it now. Let’s hope it makes it. I’m losing faith in this species...

That's a serious chop there indeed. Good luck!

Referring back to the tree been like a spong. I have 3 year old rainbow euc and I water it a good 9L every 2 days. If I leave it for longer that a week it looks half dead, but comes back fast after a drink.

Yep prob what went wrong here. It’s dead. Had pretty much no root system. Maybe it rotted but I don’t know. It grew powerfully for years but then didn’t thrive for the last year.

Always sad when you loose one. I have had maybe 5 trees die this summer.

I mainly seem to lose them over winter. I lost two more bougainvilleas this winter. I’m thinking I’ll just put them in 100% pumice from now on.
