Eucalyptus sideroxlyn

Post by Sno »

The story so far , I started 8 or so years ago . I really wanted to make a shohin gum so this tree was bought as tube stock and put in a colander for a couple of years

After that it went into a shohin pot for a few years (sorry no photo ) . I decided that it didn’t work at the trunk size it was at so I put it into a nursery flat for a few years to thicken and then later chopped it with a new leader wired up .

So in December I repotted into a over size bonsai pot . It struggled through a hard summer . It was hot and neglected , I was away a lot doing family stuff and fighting fires .
It started to shed its bark a couple of weeks ago .

It finished shedding today . I gave it a trim because half the branches were pushing strong growth while the other half were weak .

Damn nice tree Sno. I definitely enjoy seeing your gum trees as they are a source of inspiration.

Question! Did you wire the tree or was it allowed to grow freely like that?

Good start. Leaf size looks quite good. I expected them to be larger.
I wonder how long before these start to develop the characteristic deeply fissured black bark?

The trunks movement was created by chopping and then wiring up a branch as a new leader a couple of times . I have had wire on the branches at different stages .
