Eucalyptus platypus Cabidachi/ clump graft

I bought 5 little Eucalyptus platypus saplings last week. I decided to bare root them and tie them together to hopefully force them to fuse into each other.
I taped them together and then put 2 large cable ties around them.

I tried to keep as much roots as possible.

Should I keep it submerged in water for a couple of weeks until it recovers? not to sure if this gum tree likes water as much as red river gum. There is plenty of spagnum moss around the roots to keep them wet anyway.

It’s potted up now. I will wire the rest of the branches and style it in the morning. I’m not sure how aggressive I can be with these trees with all the the root pruning and the bending but I will find out soon if they can handle it.

It’s a very beautiful species of gum the leaves are pretty small and look good.

Just keep the soil damp rather than sitting in water. Otherwise nothing further to offer. I put all my transplants straight back on the grow benches unless I know there's some really hot weather on the way. At most a little extra shade.
You may get significant leaf drop after this work. That is not always a bad sign. Many trees just adjust the leaf cover to match root water supply until everything settles down. you have not removed many roots so :fc: that won't happen this time.

We are gradually finding out more about eucs as bonsai but at the moment they appear to be unpredictable. Sometimes respond with masses of shoots, other times whole sections will die after pruning.
If this one does well after the transplant you will need to carefully watch the wires and the cable ties. No point getting good fusion if there's an ugly mark around the base of the clump. Something that could expand just a bit would probably have been better than the cable tie I think.

Thanks Shibui,

Yea I will keep a close eye on it and replace the cable ties when I remove the wire.

Yea I’m really babying this one and protecting it from wind as much as possible.
