Sunday afternoon I decided that I wanted to play around with trying to fuse some little PJ figs together.
I had one that’s been sitting in a grow pot for about 4 months (it’s the tall lanky one with few branches). It’s an unremarkable fig and I thought it would be an excellent candidate for some experimentation. What I wanted to do was get more branching down low, so I popped into the big green shed and acquired 3 little starters that had branching down low.
I removed most of the soil from them all, gave them a seasol bath (so the roots wouldn’t dry out while I went on an excursion with the GF).
Wired them all together in 3 places, at the base (under the soil) in the middle and up the top. I have a feeling that the top wire may be too tight, but we will see.
There is a little fig in a black pot in the background of the last photo that was also bought 4 months ago. It has produced branches everywhere so it will be a stand alone project.

Re: PJ Fig Sunday Project
Did you 'carve' any of the bark away on the joining sides or is that unnecessary for Ficus?

Re: PJ Fig Sunday Project
I believe it's not necessary. Figs naturally fuse themselves to themselves all the time. Also because they are so young, they haven't developed their mature bark yet.
Just playing around with them.
I did read somewhere that you shouldn't feed them after tying them together (but I did anyway to see what happens).

Re: PJ Fig Sunday Project
Not well, unfortunately they are all in a better place.
I'm thinking about grabbing some more and trying again because the PJ fig in the square pot in the background is going gangbusters.
I believe Autumn/summer is a better time for fusion as ficus grow like weeds when there is plenty of Sun around.
