Jumbo Ficus from pot

Post by Homer911 »

I stumbled across this tree last week and thought it would make a good large bonsai.

I cant help it, I'm fond of a large one!

It was initially in a pot and the owner then planted in the ground. They immediately realised that they no longer wanted it.

I have planted it in the ground for 3 reasons.

I dont have a pot big enough for it.

I dont have the substrate available at the moment

I want to create very fast growth to develop some shoots.

From my understanding ficus are very hardy but I hope I got enough of the root ball. I know that they are easy to develop roots but with such a dramatic trunk chop, rootball reduction and a transplant in the winter... lets wait and see. I am fairly positive though.

I am hoping to create some aerial roots during the summer and create some narley trunk details.

Good luck with this.
From the photos this is possibly Ficus benjamina - weeping fig. They are often sold as ornamental trees.
Weeping fig is nowhere near as hardy as our natives. Sometimes they don't sprout on older wood and I believe that don't tolerate really radical root pruning either.
:fc: that yours will respond to the reduction.
