Progression thread: Leptospermum lanigerum x

I purchased a few of these from The Wildflower Place at Erina for $16

This species is gold. Incredibly hardy and tolerates low sun, overwatering, underwatering, heavy root removal, trunk chops and harsh language.
It has never even shown any signs of being affected by Myrtle Rust. Very hardy tree!

I am not sure what it is crossed with, but I recall Shibui or someone mentioning in a previous thread what it was crossed with.

Hi Rory ,just cut back some of these the other day .WOW can they put on some weight in a short time just hope it back buds as well. Looks like you have plenty of low branches to work with ,should be a winner . Cheers John.

You've just described most Leptos I have growing. But I concur wholeheartedly. This particular species is really fast growing.
And their foliage is somewhat unique and very pretty.

Yeah I always leave a multitude of branching down low on my stock if I can. It is better to have options later on, rather than a longer branch-less trunk.
Its a common mistake a lot of newer folk make, including myself early on in my endeavours to not select material with plenty of branches down low.
As a newbie you tend to focus only on the trunkline, forgetting that in 10 years time it probably wont look anything like what it does now.

My twisty Leptospermum, originally labelled L. lanigerum has been more accurately identified as
L lanigerum var. grandifolium (thanks again Sno)
Not sure that this is the same, there are some similarities from the looks of your pics. If it is, it is hard to find a bad word about how this takes to bonsai culture. If anything, the abundance of budding and prolific growth/ability to thicken mean you can’t drop your game for a second… before you know it, it will be a full sized tree and out of control! Also drinks like a fish so keeping water up to it is crucial. Really enjoy working with mine, your tree looks good too. If I find more of these I’ll be investing I think… no idea where I’ll put them though!

Nothing much has been done with this one. Just repotted and trimmed a bit.

I realize its not quite yet 01.01.2023, but its easier to post that its 2023, so looking back people can easily distinguish that its a year apart. Its only 1 day before the actual date.

This is a fantastic species for bonsai. Placed into an Adam Luczak pot (Poland).
