Stick in a pot styphelioides

Post by treeman »

A stick with a future though!

3 years in the ground and 1 in the pot. Ready for thinking about branches.

About 40cm high and about 5cm at the base.

Grown from seed?
It may have been left to grow in the ground but clearly you have paid it some attention, potential galore. This progression is gonna be fun!

M. stypehloides is a good choice for a beginner Mike  Quite tough - it will usually come back from the dead after getting too dry and, as the photos show, it can produce abundant shoots from older wood after hard pruning. Also seems to tolerate reasonably radical root pruning too.
Wire and bend the small seedlings seems to be a very good idea with most natives - before they get too brittle or too tough to bend.

I'll be watching with the others to see how you choose to develop branching and overall shape.

Just out of interest, what time of year did you transplant this one from the growing beds?

This came out in late summer I think Neil. I would probably prefer late spring though.

Yes from seed. They also strike well from reasonably large cuttings put straight into wet sand.

Nice update.

What’s the little Mel you got growing there on the bottom right of the photo?
