Cut back for this tree today too ... next move will be a new pot in about a month or so. Happy with the progress.

True to form ... a month from the last trim I put this tree into a pot yesterday. I went with a slight change of angle to help lessen the "verticality" of the middle section of the trunk. There was a decent reduction of the roots, but I think plenty of fine stuff still remains so I think it should be OK. It's back in a water tray so hopefully that helps it with the recovery. Also left the new foliar growth and I'll look at cutting back in another month or so depending on how it bounces back.
Pot is by Marie Hewartson for those interested.

Nice work Ryan.

Lovely pot and tree. Amazing what a ever so slight change of angle can do for final image.

Progress picture after some work today for this Mel.
Probably cut it back a bit harder than the other one I posted yesterday, it’ll fill in though in no time at all.

Hi Reece,
Great tree. I wonder what a shallower, wider pot would look like?
Cheers,

Yeah, anything is possible… but I’m pretty satisfied with it for the time being. Might feel like a change at some point though!

I like the size of pot it’s in now myself, the tree is centre stage and not competing for attention at all with the pot. Nice combo and beautiful tree

No worries. I just fixed it for myself.

Ahh that's better.
BTW I have never taken anybody's advice on pots so I expect everybody to do the same with my advice. ;)

Thanks for the virt!
Like I said, happy with how it is for now, but nothing needs to be forever so a change in the future is possible, and something of this scale is worth considering. Not sure the rootball could sit that low right now in such a shallow pot at any rate… but one day, yes. I probably would go with a more “earthy” colour … I feel like this one looks like the tree stole it from a maple, but that is probably just me.
I appreciate the effort, it’s good to have a bit of discussion on stuff like this.

I don't think we always need to put natives in brown pots. I get it on some level, as it is 'tasteful'. Taste is the enemy of art - Duchamp.

It could be where you come from in Australia? I'm on the north coast of NSW where the colours might be more vibrant than other places.

Yes the pot pic was stolen from Andrew Robson's website. A maple could sit in it nicely, but it has a hazel in it now.

Nice Mel. Wouldn't it be spectacular if you could get it covered in flowers - there's a challenge.
Cheers

Mid spring cut back after it had been left to grow all winter since the repot. As you can see, apically dominant is an understatement. Hopefully pushing back on the top will encourage some development/growth down lower.

Thanks for the thread Ryceman, i learnt a lot from that and very interesting seeing the progression.

I’m brand new to deliberately keeping small trees ( I can’t call it bonsai till i've grown some!) and just got 2x mel lin sp. to learn with and yours make perfect inspiration.
